Desk Work and Back Pain: Small Changes That May Help - Dr. Hamid's Physio and Pain Clinic

Back discomfort during desk work is common, but there is no single perfect sitting posture that prevents it for everyone. Your work setup, time spent in one position, activity, sleep, stress, and health all may contribute.

    Change position regularly

Try to break up long, uninterrupted periods of sitting. Stand, walk briefly, or change position when it is practical. Short movement breaks can make the workday less static; they do not need to be complicated workouts.

    Make your workstation comfortable

    • Place your screen where you can read it without repeatedly leaning forward.
    • Keep frequently used items within comfortable reach.
    • Adjust chair and desk height so you can work without holding an awkward position.
    • Use a headset if you often hold a phone between your ear and shoulder.

Comfort matters more than trying to hold a rigid “correct” posture all day. Desk setup advice from Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust includes varying position and making the workstation work for you.

    Keep active within your tolerance

Walking and ordinary daily activity can usually continue as symptoms allow. If pain is persistent, severe, or limits work or sleep, a healthcare professional can assess it. A physiotherapist can help identify useful activity changes and an individual exercise plan.

    When to seek care

Seek medical advice if back pain is getting worse, follows significant trauma, comes with fever or feeling unwell, or is accompanied by new numbness or weakness. Urgent care is needed for new problems controlling the bladder or bowel, or numbness around the genitals or bottom.
