Pain under the heel during the first steps after waking or resting can occur with plantar fasciitis, but the symptom alone cannot confirm the cause. Heel discomfort may also relate to other tissues, injury, or a health condition that needs separate attention.
What is plantar fasciitis?
The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue along the sole of the foot. Plantar fasciitis can cause pain under the heel, often worse with the first steps after rest. Symptoms can vary from person to person. See the NHS overview of plantar fasciitis.
What may help?
Management depends on symptoms and activity. It may include adjusting activities temporarily, comfortable supportive footwear, and exercises selected to suit your foot and ankle. A physiotherapist can assess your symptoms, walking and standing demands, and relevant movement before recommending a plan. Insoles are one option for some people, but they are not required by everyone and are not a guaranteed cure.
If symptoms are linked to a recent injury, are severe, or make it difficult to put weight on the foot, seek medical advice. A clinician can also advise if symptoms are not improving or if another diagnosis should be considered.
When to book an assessment
Consider an assessment if heel pain keeps returning, limits your work or walking, or you are unsure how to adjust activity. Bring the shoes you use most often so they can be considered as part of the discussion.
